Vista and DRM: Be Afraid
If you're a Windows user and are thinking about upgrading to Vista, or you're a PC user and are buying a new PC that may come pre-loaded with one of the numerous flavors of Vista, I strongly urge you to listen to the Security Now podcasts that cover Vista's new DRM model in glorious detail. Specifically you need to (yes, that's NEED to) listen to episodes 73, 74, 75, and 77 (I haven't listened to 77 quite yet, but it's Microsoft's response to all the hoopla, which should be good).
Long and short of it is that Vista has the most "pervasive and invasive" (to borrow from one of the podcast's descriptions) DRM ever put into an operating system, and it's in all flavors of Vista (not just the "Ultimate" edition, which is essentially the new Media Center edition) because it's buried deep in the Windows kernel. The worst thing to me is the fact that content owners (think MPAA and RIAA) are dictating technology decisions at an amazing level. In some cases the hardware you have today may simply stop being able to play said content in the future because they have built into the OS the ability to revoke hardware drivers at any point in the future, either for technical reasons such as the discovery of "content leakage" or because the hardware company stopped paying their Vista DRM license fees.
I realize I've flip-flopped on Vista a bit, going from "I'll never install that" when I switched from XP to Ubuntu, to not being able to resist the urge to try it out, and now I'm looking at my ThinkPad thinking "what have I DONE?" So I wanted everyone to be aware of just how utterly insane this whole DRM thing has gotten and urge you to "just say no" to Vista. Or, if you can't resist, please listen to those podcasts and at least go into the whole Vista thing with your eyes wide open.
