An appeals court on Tuesday ordered Microsoft to stop selling Microsoft Word 2007 and other Office 2007 products by Jan. 11 because the software infringes on a patent held by a Canadian company. The judge also hit Microsoft with a $290 million fine.

For once Microsoft has to answer the call of justice. The XML format is the foundation of Office 2007. What will they do without it? Assuming it's possible to re-write the software and re-distribute it by the Jan. 11 deadline, I think it's safe to say Office developers will be getting no time off this holiday season.
